A streaming show.
From license to launch and renewal.
Follow Harbor Street through the decisions, records and handoffs that make a season available to subscribers.
SVOD means subscription video on demand. Netflix and Prime Video are familiar reference points. This example uses Meridian Stream, a fictional service, and a separate eight-episode Harbor Street training scenario.
Streaming is broader than SVOD: it also includes advertising-funded services, rentals, purchases and linear channels. A service may combine models. This base exercise follows subscription-included, ad-free viewing under a completed-content license. All business terms, metrics and platform requirements below are fictional teaching assumptions.
Acquisition → Rights & avails → Delivery & QC → Catalog & release → Playback → Viewing & payments → Renewal or expiry
01Understand the subscription model
A subscriber pays for access to a service catalog. A content owner licenses a season to that service. These are separate transactions with different records and owners. A subscription service can also carry advertising, but the base exercise follows subscription-included, ad-free viewing. Streaming includes other models such as advertising-funded services and rentals. Netflix and Prime Video are useful points of reference; the records here belong to a fictional service.
Sample record 01: Series brief
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Series | Harbor Street, season 1 |
| Premise | A family drama about a waterfront neighborhood facing redevelopment. |
| Format | 8 complete episodes; approximately 22–23 minutes each |
| Provider | Harbor Street Pictures (fictional) |
| Service | Meridian Stream (fictional subscription service) |
| Scenario | A separate eight-episode SVOD teaching scenario using the Harbor Street title; no rights are implied by the linear broadcast exercise. A completed season is licensed, not commissioned. |
| Scope | Subscription-included viewing; advertising sales and rental/purchase are outside this exercise. |
Sample record 02: Acquisition evaluation
| Criterion | Finding | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Audience fit | Adult serialized drama | Review comparable catalog titles |
| Package | 8 completed episodes | Confirm episode and version IDs |
| Rights | US and Canada; UK starts later | Validate each window |
| Delivery risk | French subtitles and English captions pending | Require acceptance evidence |
| Decision | Conditional approval | Complete rights, commercial and delivery reviews |
Harbor Street Pictures licenses the season to Meridian Stream The provider delivers approved materials; Meridian publishes the authorized catalog offer; an eligible subscriber selects an episode and plays it
02Evaluate and license the show
Acquisitions checks audience fit, commercial terms, available rights and the ability to deliver. An attractive show still needs a precise grant of rights: model, territory, dates, exclusivity and permitted uses. An original commission would introduce production financing and approvals before this completed-content licensing workflow.
Sample record 02: Acquisition evaluation
| Criterion | Finding | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Audience fit | Adult serialized drama | Review comparable catalog titles |
| Package | 8 completed episodes | Confirm episode and version IDs |
| Rights | US and Canada; UK starts later | Validate each window |

| Launch policy | All 8 episodes released together in each territory |
| Exclusivity | SVOD exclusivity in the licensed territories during their windows |
| Other uses | Downloads and advertising rights are not granted in this exercise |
| Amounts | USD; taxes and currency conversion excluded from the exercise |
Extract SVOD use, US/CA/GB territories, individual starts, common exclusive end, and the all-eight release policy Also retain exclusivity and restrictions on downloads/ads
03Translate rights into availability
An availability record tells the platform when and where an offer may be active. It must reflect the agreement. An accepted delivery does not grant rights, and an accepted availability record does not prove a complete playable package. In this scenario a start is inclusive and the end is exclusive. All times in the records are UTC.
Sample record 04: Territory and language matrix

04Build the catalog record
A viewer reaches the correct episode through consistent title and episode identifiers, display order, localized text, artwork and approved release messaging. A correct video can still appear in the wrong place if metadata is wrong. Marketing approvals should reference the same territory dates as rights operations.
Sample record 06: Episode metadata draft
| Episode ID | Episode number | Title | Runtime seconds | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HS-S01E01 | 1 | Homecoming | 1350 | en |
| HS-S01E02 | 2 | The Offer | 1340 | en |

| HS-TILE-01 | Catalog thumbnail | Approved | Check small-screen legibility |
| HS-TRAILER-01 | Season trailer | Approved | Apply territory and release date rules |
| HS-GB-SOCIAL-01 | UK social card: January 15 | Draft | Correct to February 1 before approval |
E04 incorrectly has episode number 3; set it to 4 while retaining HS-S01E04 The GB card says January 15 and must say February 1
05Prepare the delivery package
The package contains video, associated audio, timed text, artwork and metadata. A manifest ties each component to the correct episode and approved cut. After ingest, the service or its vendors transcode approved masters into adaptive bitrate renditions, package segments and playback manifests, apply access protection such as DRM where required, and distribute through a CDN. The viewer’s player requests authorized playback and selects a suitable rendition. Captions and subtitles have different purposes. This fictional deal requires English captions everywhere and French-Canadian subtitles for Canada; those training requirements do not substitute for a real service specification or local accessibility requirements.
Sample record 08: Video asset manifest
| Episode ID | Approved video ID | Runtime seconds | Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| HS-S01E01 | HS-S01E01-V2 | 1350 | V2 |

| E03 | Accepted V2 | V1 timing rejected | Create and accept V2 subtitle file |
| E06 | Missing | Accepted V2 | Deliver and accept V2 English caption file |
E06 English captions are missing, preventing a complete season in all three territories E03 French-Canadian subtitles match the wrong cut, adding a Canada-specific block
06Receive, inspect and accept
A transfer receipt proves that a system received something. QC determines whether it meets the relevant specification, and acceptance records the authorized decision. Track each exception, corrective version, test result and signoff. Automated checks can find missing fields and files; human review may still be required for content and language issues.
Sample record 13: QC exceptions
| Issue | Asset or scope | Finding | Affected release |
|---|---|---|---|
| QC-01 | E03 French-Canadian subtitles | Timed to V1 instead of V2 | Canada |
| QC-02 | E06 English captions | Missing | US; CA; GB |

IN-003 records file receipt before QC; E03 subtitles subsequently fail version alignment DA-01 at January 14, 18:00 UTC is the complete delivery acceptance
07Choose and control the release
On-demand release planning selects the availability date and release pattern rather than assigning every viewing to a linear airtime. All-at-once and weekly releases produce different readiness and marketing dependencies. The chosen pattern here is all eight episodes together, with separate territory starts.
Sample record 15: Release calendar
| Territory | Release UTC | Episodes | Promotion rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | 2027-01-15 08:00 | 1–8 | May say available January 15 |
| CA | 2027-01-15 08:00 | 1–8 | May say available January 15 |
| GB | 2027-02-01 08:00 | 1–8 | Use February 1 messaging |
| AU | None | None | Do not advertise availability |
Sample record 16: Readiness snapshot, January 14 at 18:10 UTC
| Gate | US | CA | GB | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| License and avails | Pass | Pass | Pass: future start | Rights operations |

| Decision | Hold | Hold | Hold until February 1 and fixes | Release manager |
Hold US and CA because E05 points to V1 Engineering must correct and test the manifest
08Promote without promising unavailable content
Promotions create a promise to the viewer. The date, location, subscription offer, episode count and landing page must agree with actual availability. A scheduled campaign can outlive a last-minute release hold unless marketing and release operations share an approval dependency.
Sample record 17: Campaign plan
| Territory | Asset | Publish UTC | Message | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US/CA | Trailer | 2027-01-08 16:00 | All 8 episodes January 15 | Approved |
| US/CA | Launch tile | 2027-01-15 08:00 | Now streaming | Dependent on launch signoff |
| GB | Corrected social card | 2027-01-25 16:00 | All 8 episodes February 1 | Approval pending |
| AU | No campaign | None | No availability claim | Excluded |
US/CA after approval: “All eight episodes of Harbor Street are now streaming with your Meridian Stream subscription.” GB pre-launch: “Harbor Street arrives February 1 All eight episodes included with your Meridian Stream subscription.” Suppress or reschedule the launch tile if signoff is withheld
09Verify the viewer experience
Publishing a title is only part of launch. Test the catalog entry, episode order, correct cut, audio, language selections, entitlement and playback on representative devices. Check adaptive bitrate switching, manifests and segments, CDN delivery and DRM license acquisition where used. A successful sign-in alone does not prove content entitlement. Verify denied access as well as successful viewing. Keep evidence identifying the tested territory, device/app version and time.
Sample record 18: Playback and catalog verification
| Check UTC | Territory | Device scope | Result | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027-01-14 19:00 | US/CA | Test web; iOS; TV device | E05 manifest now V2; audio and captions pass | PLAY-02 |
| 2027-01-14 19:10 | GB | Pre-release entitlement test | Playback denied before start; corrected UK card approved | PLAY-03; MKT-02 |
| 2027-01-15 08:10 | US/CA | Web; iOS; TV device | All 8 episodes playable; order, captions and subtitles pass | PLAY-04 |
| 2027-01-15 08:15 | AU/GB | Geo-entitlement test | Playback denied | GEO-01 |
The package is accepted at 18:00 January 14; E05 is corrected and tested at 19:00; release manager signoff occurs at 19:30 as recorded with the license milestone evidence Authorize scheduled US/CA activation at 08:00 January 15, conditional on no new holds
10Handle a launch incident
Triage starts with the viewer symptom and scope: episode, territory, device/app version, account entitlement and language track. Compare working and failing paths before replacing an accepted asset. Separate source-file faults from packaging, cache, entitlement and client behavior. Escalate with reproducible evidence and record recovery verification.
Sample record 19: Launch incident
| Field | Observation |
|---|---|
| Incident ID | INC-017 |
| Reported UTC | 2027-01-15 09:05 |
| Symptom | Canada E03 French subtitles unavailable on one TV app version |
| Scope | Web and iOS pass; TV app build 6.2 fails |
| Immediate response | Log impact; reproduce on build 6.2; compare subtitle selection and manifest |
| Investigation | Accepted subtitle exists; TV app cache holds earlier manifest |
| Resolution | Invalidate affected manifest cache; retest with fresh and existing sessions |
| Closed UTC | 2027-01-15 10:00 after TV verification |
| Prevention | Add existing-session cache test to release verification |
Confirm affected customers, territory and app build; reproduce E03 French selection on TV 6.2; compare web/iOS and accepted V2 subtitle evidence; inspect delivered manifest and cache version The working clients and accepted source point toward a client/manifest path
11Read viewing results carefully
Define the reporting window, population and thresholds before interpreting engagement. Episode completion, season completion, hours viewed and reach answer different questions. The first seven days undercount people who will finish later. Viewing data can inform a renewal discussion, but cannot by itself prove that a title caused subscription acquisition or retention.
Sample record 20: First 7 days viewing summary, US and CA
| Metric | Value | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible active subscription accounts | 100000 | Accounts eligible during the reporting window |
| Accounts starting E01 | 12000 | Distinct accounts with at least 2 minutes of E01 |
| E01 finishers | 9000 | Accounts reaching at least 90% of E01 |
| Season finishers | 4800 | E01 starters reaching at least 90% of E08 within the window |
| Total viewing hours | 68000 | All valid Harbor Street viewing including repeats |
| Comparable drama E01 completion | 0.7 | Fictional internal benchmark; same definition and window |
| Comparable drama season completion | 0.45 | Fictional internal benchmark; same definition and window |
Reach = 12,000 / 100,000 = 12% E01 completion = 9,000 / 12,000 = 75%, 5 percentage points above the 70% benchmark
12Reconcile subscriber and license money
Subscriber billing belongs to the service. License payments belong to the content agreement. The commercial relationship may use fixed fees, milestones, minimum guarantees or other negotiated terms. This exercise uses a fixed fee, so stream counts do not set the provider payment. Keep invoices, acceptance evidence and authorized amounts aligned.
Sample record 21: Illustrative monthly subscription billing
| Field | Value | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Opening paid accounts | 100000 | US/CA service-wide opening balance |
| New paid accounts | 5000 | US/CA additions during month |
| Cancellations effective in month | 4000 | US/CA paid accounts leaving during month |
| Monthly fee USD | 12 | Single fictional plan |
| Billed account-months | 101000 | Simplified billable units; no proration |
| Refunds USD | 6000 | Service-wide refunds |
| Assumption | No tax, fees or failed payments | Simplified arithmetic; no show-level attribution |
Sample record 22: License payment milestones
| Milestone | Share | Evidence at review | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signed agreement | 0.25 | Signed 2026-12-15 | Eligible |
| Full delivery accepted | 0.5 | DA-01 on 2027-01-14 18:00 UTC | Eligible |
| First authorized launch | 0.25 | Release manager signoff 2027-01-14 19:30; PLAY-04 on January 15 | Eligible after launch verification |
| Additional invoice request USD | 12000 | No approved amendment; invoice total 252000 | Disputed difference |
Closing paid accounts = 100,000 + 5,000 − 4,000 = 101,000 Gross simplified billings = 101,000 account-months × USD 12 = USD 1,212,000
13Renew, expire and close the record
Renewal combines audience fit, usage, costs, rights strategy and properly designed acquisition/retention analysis. If no extension is signed, a content team must expire the offer, update discovery and marketing, verify access behavior and retain the history needed to explain what happened. Removing a catalog offer and deleting source assets are separate decisions.
Sample record 23: Renewal and expiry register
| Item | Due UTC | Owner | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renewal review | 2027-11-15 08:00 | Acquisitions | Viewing; cost; audience fit; retention analysis |
| Renewal decision | 2027-12-15 08:00 | Acquisitions and rights | Signed extension or expiry instruction |
| Remove availability if no extension | 2028-01-15 08:00 | Rights and catalog operations | Window ends exclusively at this instant |
| Verify expiry | 2028-01-15 08:10 | Platform operations | New sessions denied in US CA GB; promotions updated |
| In-progress session behavior | Before expiry | Rights and product | Agree handling against contract and playback policy; not specified here |
| Close out | 2028-01-16 18:00 | Finance and operations | Payments reconciled; acceptance and expiry evidence retained |
Recommend further review before renewal: episode-one completion beats the benchmark but early season completion trails it; request mature cohorts, costs, comparable titles and retention evidence If not renewed: confirm no signed extension; expire US/CA/GB at January 15, 2028 08:00 UTC; update promotions; verify new-session denial; follow the agreed in-progress-session policy; reconcile payments and retain evidence
