FAST Sports — Event and Pop-up Channel
Launch and close a temporary sports channel while managing blackouts, live overruns, EPG changes, inventory ownership and league settlement.
Harbor Cup creates a temporary free sports channel with live matches, replay windows and split advertising inventory.
All scenario organizations, events, contracts, prices, rates, metrics, specifications and operational records are fictional teaching assumptions. This is independent Broadcast Workflow training, with no playable media or official vendor certification.
Event rights → Channel launch → Blackouts → Live overrun → Settlement → Shutdown
01Define the temporary channel
A sports pop-up is a scheduled channel with a bounded event purpose and end date. Its live matches, replays and surrounding library items can have different rights. Treat channel activation and each asset’s permission as separate controls.
Sample record 01: Pop-up channel brief
| Field | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Channel | Harbor Cup; HCUP-001 |
| Channel window UTC | 2027-06-19 17:00 to June 21 22:00 exclusive |
| Pilot match | June 19 18:00–20:00 planned |
| Model | Free scheduled sports channel with advertising |
| Event organization | Fictional Harbor Cup League |
No.
02Translate blackouts into test cases
Sports restrictions may be more specific than a country. A paid account, working player or US address does not override an excluded location. The scenario uses a deny-and-support rule for uncertain location; real policies need their own approved implementation.
Sample record 02: Event rights grant
| Use | Territory | Window UTC |
|---|---|---|
| Live pilot match and postgame | US except Colorado | June 19 17:00–21:30 maximum |
| Match replay | Same permitted geography | Until June 21 22:00 exclusive |
| Channel availability | US subject to asset-level restrictions | June 19 17:00–June 21 22:00 |
| Public highlights / downloads | Not granted | Separate approval |
| Library documentary | US | June 19 17:00–22:00 |
No, if the viewer is in the excluded Colorado location under this scenario.
03Separate inventory ownership
A distribution agreement can assign advertising opportunities to different parties. Allocation share and realized delivery share are not the same thing. Preserve ownership through cueing, insertion and reporting so one party does not invoice another’s inventory.
Sample record 04: Distribution and inventory contract
| Item | Fictional term |
|---|---|
| Platform inventory | 60% of allocated ad opportunities; separately measured |
| Publisher inventory | 40%; separately measured |
| Platform service fee | 20% of publisher-owned qualified revenue |
| League participation | 50% of publisher receipts after service fee |
| Qualified CPM USD | 12 |
| Reporting | Ownership key required on every monetized opportunity |
No.
04Onboard and rehearse the whole service
A reachable endpoint is only an onboarding check. Verify geography, audio, captions, guide times, fallback and shutdown instructions on representative devices. Sports restrictions often fail in a specific client or a reused offer configuration.
Sample record 05: Channel onboarding register
| Item | State | Action |
|---|---|---|
| HCUP-001 EPG ID | Accepted | Retain |
| US geography | Accepted | Verify state-level exclusion |
| Colorado blackout | Not applied on TV app | Hold match launch |
| Stream URL | Reachable | Still requires device and rights tests |
| Shutdown instruction | June 21 22:00 | Obtain partner acknowledgment |
The TV blackout failure, wrong backup audio, ambiguous guide time and restricted fallback promotion all require correction.
05Accept fixes against the planned rundown
Each correction should close a recorded failure with a test result. The planned rundown then establishes the baseline for output comparison and later changes. Retain UTC timing and partner acknowledgments rather than only local schedule edits.
Sample record 06: Planned June 19 rundown
| UTC | Minutes | Item |
|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 60 | Preview |
| 18:00 | 120 | Pilot match |
| 20:00 | 30 | Postgame |
| 20:30 | 45 | Library documentary |
| 21:15 | 45 | Closing / approved continuity |
| 22:00 | 0 | End this day block; later channel programming separately scheduled |
The June 18 test shows Colorado denied and California allowed on the affected TV path.
06Cue advertising around the actual sport
Live sports contains stoppages and uncertain duration. A wall-clock opportunity in a draft must not force advertising over active play. Coordinate the director’s actual cue with ownership keys, permitted break duration and approved fallback.
Sample record 10: Sports advertising cue policy
| Condition | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Natural stoppage | Take only director-approved break |
| Match in active play | Do not force an old scheduled break |
| Overtime | Use only newly authorized opportunities |
| Platform versus publisher | Preserve ownership key |
| No fill | Approved fallback; not billable delivery |
Continue the authorized match.
07Rebalance an overrun
An overrun moves downstream programming and consumes flexible continuity. Check the proposed end against event rights and every affected asset’s window. Preserve the day’s hard end only with an explicit revised plan, not silent truncation.
Sample record 12: Overrun request
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Producer request UTC | June 19 19:50 |
| New match end | 20:25 |
| Live-rights maximum | 21:30 |
| Postgame duration | 30 minutes retained |
| Downstream consequence | Documentary and continuity starts move |
Match duration increases from 120 to 145 minutes.
08Propagate the new viewer promise
The platform guide and promotional messages need the revised timing. Partner acceptance is part of the handoff. Keep channel expiry unchanged unless the rights and distribution agreement authorizes a separate extension.
Sample record 14: EPG and promotion change log
| Item | Old | Approved new |
|---|---|---|
| Match end | 20:00 | 20:25 |
| Postgame start | 20:00 | 20:25 |
| Documentary start | 20:30 | 20:55 |
| Closing start | 21:15 | 21:40 |
| Channel end date | June 21 22:00 | Unchanged |
No.
09Create a permitted replay
A replay needs its own accepted edit, captions, schedule placement and geography. The live archive may include preview or technical interruptions. Asset duration must fit the remaining permitted window when the scenario requires complete-asset playback within it.
Sample record 15: Replay asset acceptance
| Asset | State | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Match archive | Contains preview and interruption | Create approved match edit |
| Replay master R2 | Accepted | Correct cut and audio |
| Replay captions | Accepted after conform | Keep R2 identity |
| Availability | Pending CO rule verification | Same blackout as live |
| Clips | No permission | Do not publish highlights |
A complete 145-minute match would end after the exclusive 22:00 cutoff.
10Recover from a replay blackout leak
A replay can accidentally inherit only part of a live offer’s access policy. Contain the affected path, correct its rules and verify both prohibited and permitted viewers. Tests should include clients retaining old manifests or authorization state.
Sample record 17: Blackout replay incident
| Field | Observation |
|---|---|
| Time | June 20 18:05 |
| Symptom | Old mobile manifest allows replay in CO |
| Cause | Replay offer omitted inherited state restriction |
| Containment | Disable affected replay offer; correct policy |
| Acceptance | CO denied on fresh and cached clients; allowed CA playback retained |
Confirm Colorado is denied on fresh and cached clients while eligible California playback still works.
11Settle only publisher-owned delivery
The report includes platform-owned and publisher-owned advertising. Their gross revenues may be shown together for operations but must follow the ownership contract in billing. Apply the publisher service fee and league share only to the stated publisher base.
Sample record 18: Qualified delivery by owner
| Owner | Raw starts | Excluded starts | Qualified starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | 100000 | 10000 | 90000 |
| Publisher | 70000 | 10000 | 60000 |
| Exclusions | Duplicates and invalid traffic | Mutually exclusive within each owner | No double subtraction |
Publisher revenue is 60000 / 1000 × USD 12 = USD 720.
12Close the temporary service across partners
A pop-up end requires coordinated changes to guide, access, output, caches and resources. Stopping infrastructure before output has been safely closed can create a poor viewer experience. Conversely, leaving a stream available after rights end can permit unauthorized use.
Sample record 21: Channel shutdown checklist
| Layer | Action at June 21 22:00 UTC |
|---|---|
| Channel endpoint | Stop or replace with separately authorized neutral output per partner agreement |
| Match entitlement | Deny new sessions |
| EPG | Remove expired programming and channel promotion |
| Cached clients | Verify no new restricted playback |
| Infrastructure | Shut down unused event resources after accepted output close |
| History | Retain rights, actual logs, counts and settlement |
No.
13Complete the league and operations handoff
Financial closeout and rights closeout rely on different evidence. Keep actual timing, owned inventory and expiry tests so the league can review the settlement. Future tournaments need their own grants rather than borrowing authorization from this event.
Sample record 23: League closeout register
| Task | Owner | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Final game timing | Event operations | Actual rundown |
| Inventory ownership | Advertising operations | Qualified owner-keyed ledger |
| League payment | Finance | USD 288 calculation in worked case |
| Rights end | Rights and platform | All partner expiry tests |
| Future event reuse | New event grant | No assumption from this pop-up |
Include the actual rundown, owner-keyed qualified counts, the USD 288 league calculation, partner expiry evidence and open-action ownership.
