Broadcaster Catch-up — BVOD
Follow a broadcast program into catch-up: replay rights, clean edits, publication timing, ads, viewing evidence and removal.
Fictional Harbor Television moves an aired Harbor Street episode into a seven-day catch-up offer.
All scenario organizations, events, contracts, prices, rates, metrics, specifications and operational records are fictional teaching assumptions. This is independent Broadcast Workflow training, with no playable media or official vendor certification.
Broadcast → Replay rights → Clean edit → Publish → Advertising → Expiry
01Identify the broadcaster replay offer
Broadcaster video on demand describes a broadcaster’s on-demand service. It can use advertising, subscriptions or both. This scenario uses free signed-in catch-up viewing after a linear airing. The lesson follows the handoff from transmission to replay operations rather than treating BVOD as a universal payment model.
Sample record 01: Catch-up commission
| Field | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Broadcaster | Harbor Television |
| Service | Harbor Replay |
| Episode | HS-E01 |
| Linear slot UTC | 2027-01-04 20:00–20:30 |
| Model | Free broadcaster on-demand replay with advertising |
| Account | Sign-in required; no paid subscription in this scenario |
Its publication and expiry are tied to an actual broadcast and a seven-day replay grant.
02Use the actual broadcast end
A catch-up agreement may define a window relative to the actual end of transmission. Scheduled time and actual time should not be substituted silently. A publication delay also does not automatically change a licensed end date.
Sample record 03: Actual broadcast record
| Field | UTC / value |
|---|---|
| Program start | 2027-01-04 20:00 |
| Program end | 2027-01-04 20:30 |
| Transmission status | Completed |
| Program content seconds | 1350 |
| Linear commercial and continuity seconds | 450 |
Actual transmission ends January 4 at 20:30 UTC.
03Clear the on-demand version
A linear transmission package can contain content or advertising that is not authorized for replay. Review underlying rights as well as the main program grant. Select a version that solves the rights issue without introducing an unapproved timing change.
Sample record 05: Version and edit list
| Source | Duration seconds | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast version V1 | 1800 | Contains linear advertising; not catch-up master |
| Clean picture V2 | 1350 | Correct content length; music not cleared |
| Catch-up V3 | 1350 | Approved replacement music; required deliverable |
Replace the 45-second cue from content seconds 600 to 645 using approved M07-R.
04Conform accessibility and catalog data
Version changes can affect captions, descriptions, artwork and display text. Validate timed text against the replay cut. A free sign-in requirement is different from a paid subscription, and marketing must reflect the actual territory and viewing allowance.
Sample record 07: Caption conform record
| Version | Finding | Action |
|---|---|---|
| V1 captions | Timed to broadcast cut with ads | Do not reuse unchanged |
| V3 captions | Conformed to 1350-second clean master | Check new music descriptions and timing |
| Acceptance | Web and TV display test | Required before release |
Describe GB-only replay for seven days from the actual broadcast end, with free sign-in.
05Coordinate promotion with readiness
Transmission can finish before replay delivery is ready. A scheduled endboard or social message should not promise immediate availability when a release hold remains open. Retain an approved delayed-availability message rather than publishing unsupported claims.
Sample record 09: Promotion approval
| Asset | Draft | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Linear endboard | Catch up now after transmission | Suppress if replay is not ready |
| Service tile | Available until January 11 20:30 UTC | Use corrected window |
| Social post | Download and keep | Reject: download rights absent |
Suppress it while captions and window correction remain pending.
06Replace the advertising workflow
Catch-up advertising belongs to a new viewing session. The old linear commercial arrangement does not automatically carry over. Define clean media, new ad opportunities, creative approval and no-fill behavior before monetization is enabled.
Sample record 10: Replay ad map
| Pod | Content offset seconds | Ad seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Preroll | 0 | 30 |
| Midroll A | 450 | 90 |
| Midroll B | 900 | 90 |
No.
07Authorize the actual publication
Release acceptance combines transmission status, rights, media and device tests. Each remaining blocker has an owner. A successful file delivery should not be interpreted as a release decision when its captions or availability remain unresolved.
Sample record 12: Publication readiness
| Gate | Status at 20:30 UTC | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast completed | Pass | Transmission |
| Music replacement V3 | Pass | Post-production |
| Caption test | Pending TV verification | Localization |
| Rights window corrected | Pending | Rights operations |
| Release | Hold | Replay operations |
At 20:40 UTC after the caption test, corrected availability, accurate offer text and release verification are accepted.
08Test territory and account boundaries
A broadcaster’s sign-in system and geographic policy are different controls. Test both. If the service retains a descriptive title page after expiry, that page must not expose a working new-playback path after the rights end.
Sample record 14: Geography and account tests
| Request | Expected decision |
|---|---|
| GB; signed in; within window | Allow |
| GB; not signed in | Offer free sign-in; no playback yet |
| US; signed in | Deny |
| GB; end instant reached | Deny new playback |
| Download request | Deny |
No.
09Recover from publication delay
Delay handling should tell support and marketing what is actually available and which gates remain open. Preserve the agreed replay period. Extending a window to compensate for an operational delay requires permission rather than an informal scheduling change.
Sample record 15: Publication delay incident
| Field | Observation |
|---|---|
| Incident | REPLAY-05 |
| Promised ready time | 20:30 |
| Actual release | 20:40 |
| Cause | TV caption test and window correction incomplete |
| Response | Hold launch promotion; publish only after acceptance |
| No extension assumed | Original licensed end remains January 11 20:30 |
No.
10Read viewing and advertising separately
Episode engagement measures content use. Advertising allocation and qualified delivery measure monetization. Define populations and thresholds so the same viewer activity is not used as a substitute for contract-qualified advertising evidence.
Sample record 16: Week-one viewing summary
| Metric | Count | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible accounts | 50000 | GB signed-in eligible accounts |
| Episode starters | 10000 | At least 2 content minutes |
| Episode finishers | 7000 | At least 90% content completion |
| Valid viewing hours | 3200 | Same episode and week; may include repeats |
Starter reach is 10000 / 50000 = 20%.
11Reconcile the replay contribution
This exercise pays a fixed replay license and earns advertising revenue from qualified starts. Platform deductions apply to that revenue. A filled slot is not automatically a qualified impression, so using fill in an invoice overstates receipts.
Sample record 18: Commercial inputs
| Field | Fictional value |
|---|---|
| Qualified CPM USD | 10 |
| Platform deduction | 0.2 |
| Fixed replay license USD | 500 |
| Other operating costs | Excluded |
| Invoice scope | Qualified GB replay delivery only |
Qualified advertising revenue is 75000 / 1000 × USD 10 = USD 750.
12Expire across every access layer
Expiry must reach the offer, authorization service, device state and promotional surfaces. Removing a title tile does not prove the media can no longer be started. Verify a new playback request at the end instant and on devices with cached state.
Sample record 20: Expiry propagation plan
| Layer | Action at end |
|---|---|
| Availability | End is 2027-01-11 20:30 UTC exclusive |
| Playback authorization | Deny new sessions at end |
| Catalog | Remove watch offer; retain permitted descriptive page if policy allows |
| Caches | Invalidate stale offer and authorization caches |
| Promotion | Remove current availability claims |
No.
13Repeat the process for the next episode
Each episode needs its own rights and actual broadcast trigger. Shared templates help, but one episode’s acceptance and dates do not authorize another’s publication. Close financial obligations while preserving the transmission, delivery and expiry evidence.
Sample record 22: Responsibilities
| Record / decision | Owner |
|---|---|
| Actual broadcast end | Transmission |
| Music and clean cut | Post-production and rights |
| Availability and release | Replay operations |
| Ad counts | Advertising operations |
| Settlement and license payment | Finance |
